Two Millenniums in One Lifetime!!!

Two Millenniums? You might ask and the answer is yes. A Millennium is something that happens once in every 1,000 years. With our limited and short lifetime, those who had the chance to celebrate one new millennium are more than just lucky. They are blessed.

What if you have the chance to experience that day again? What would you feel? The answer is here. For those who had celebrated the new millennium five years ago, the possibility of another one is just 983 days starting from January 1st, 2005. All you have to do is Stay Alive these wonderful 983 days and then … come to Ethiopia. No one can … or if there be the possibility no one can endure another 995 years to see another millennium.

Ethiopia and the rest of the Christian world had celebrated the 1st millennium together 1,005 years ago. This was because both were using the same calendar – the Julian calendar. But in 1582 A.D., the rest of the Christian world as a whole stopped using this calendar (made various amendments) and began using the revised Gregorian calendar except Ethiopia. The present calendar is thus seven years and eight months a head of the Julian calendar. Hence, Ethiopia too is seven years and eight months younger than the rest of the Christian world who were very much in hurry to get / be somewhere that they felt they had to change their calendar.

Want more about the Ethiopian calendar? The Ethiopian calendar has 13 months consisting of 12 months of 30 days and the thirteenth with 5 days (and 6 day once in four years - leap year). The Ethiopian New year starts at the 1st of Meskerem (falls on September 11). Meskerem signifies the closing of the winter season and the beginning of spring (bright sunshine, blooming flowers, clear sky…)

Imagine then what it would be like celebrating a second millennium in one of the world’s historically and culturally diverse and rich society of all times. It would be the experience of a lifetime and you would really be feeling 7 years younger!!!
